General weather Overview

The weather in Mexico varies based on the area and altitude. The climate of the country is mostly impacted by the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico towards the east. The northwest has the hottest weather. The Sierra Madres’ two mountain ranges, which commonly relate to arid areas, protect much of the center. Due to the continual warm temperatures and high humidity, a tropical monsoon and savannah environment with lush flora exists south of Mexico City. Winters in mountainous regions are chilly and days are short, but the southern plains are hot all year.

Fun facts

  • The smallest volcano in the world is in Mexico. Located on the outskirts of the city of Puebla, the Cuexcomate Volcano is only 43 feet tall
  • Mexico City sinks 10 inches every year. That's over 3 feet a year. This is because it was built on a lake thousands of years ago. Today the lake is part of Mexico City's aquifer system and the water demand is so great that the city is sinking.
  • Mexico has the largest number of cenotes on earth. Mexico is known for its beautiful cenotes (pronounced sen-no-tays), which are basically natural pools of freshwater. There are around 6,000 cenotes in Mexico, most of them in the Yucatan Peninsula, and all are interconnected as part of the largest underwater cave system on earth.

  • Snorkel or dive with some fascinating sea creatures like turtles, pufferfish, parrotfish, rays and so many more, including cage diving with sharks. The country also plays host to some pretty extraordinary gray whales that migrate to the warm, shallow waters off the Baja coast during the Alaskan winter
  • There’s something for everyone, from deserts to unmatched jungles
