General weather Overview
Germany is located within the moderate climate zone of Central Europe. However, due to many
factors, there are occasionally significant deviations. The North and Baltic Seas provide the
North with a great deal of rain and temperate winters. In the west, the maritime influences of the
Atlantic are apparent. The climate becomes more continental as one moves toward the
southwest. Snowy winters and dry summers are the results. Further away from the open sea, the
climate becomes occasionally subtropical. The Alps provide cooling at high altitudes in the far
south, while separating the region from the Mediterranean climate. Lower peak ranges offer a
variety of temperatures.
