General weather Overview
The climate varies from region to region. Overall, the climate is mild. The Alps run through the
country from East to West, ensuring that the North is shielded from the influence of the
Mediterranean. The north is influenced by the continental climate of Europe, which tends to be
cool and humid. North of the main ridges of the Alps, the most precipitation falls in the summer
months. At the southern tip of the Alps, warm winds from the Mediterranean generally prevail,
bringing higher temperatures and less precipitation. In the high Alps, temperatures are constantly
below freezing. Lake Maggiore, on the other hand, is one of the warmest and lowest regions in the
country.
